Birthstone Colors & Months

Birthstone colors of the month you were born.

There are 20 birthstones recognized by the National Association of Jewelers. They range in everything from color to price. Some have been used for centuries, while others were just discovered in the last 100 years.
Historically, gems of note were matched with the wearer’s sign on the zodiac, people wore them to protect against disease and disaster. Today, we recognize birthstones by the calendar month, and people wear these precious gems because of their beauty and symbolism.

How do Birthstones get their color?

Without light, there can be no color. In a pitch black room, you cannot differentiate between red and blue. Gem colors form when certain types of light are absorbed by the gems (these are called wavelengths), while other lights are not. This absorption is caused by the minerals in the stones.
Titanium absorbes light and causes the stone to appear blue.
The mineral Vanadium will make stones appear green and allow it to change colors.
Chromium is known to produce red and green gemstones.
Manganese produces pink stones.
Iron will allow stones to appear red green or yellow.
Cobalt appears blue.
Nickel appears green
The mineral copper appears to have a blue or green color to it.
